Chester le Street Town had a comfortable 3-1 win over Easington in the Ernest Armstrong Cup to move them into the last eight of the competition.
Chester were forced to make several changes from the team on Saturday because of injury, and work commitments. They took the lead after 7 minutes when Arron Thompson hit a free kick from the left to the far side for Andrew Clarkson to run in and head home. After 21 minutes, the ball was played down the left for Kieran Megran to cross to the far side but Clarkson headed just over the bar. Easington came close to an equaliser after 34 minutes. A ball into the Chester area was picked up by James Talbot but his shot was deflected for a corner. A short corner was played back to Ethan Wood and his cross found Shane O’Brien but his header went just over the bar. After 59 minutes, the ball was played through the middle for Wood but keeper Jack Wilson managed to het a touch on his shot to turn the ball for a corner. Chester doubled their lead after 67 minutes. They made a quick break and the ball was played down the left to set Daniel McGuire racing away and he cut into the box before firing the ball past Kyle Donaldson into the net. Two minutes later, a ball into the Chester area found David Vincent. His shot was deflected back to Robert Thompson but his good shot brought a good block from Wilson. After 75 minutes, Clarkson made a good run down the right to cross into the middle but Alex White failed to get a good contact with his header and the ball went wide of the target. Chester extended their lead after 81 minutes when a slip by James Appleby allowed Clarkson to win possession, race clear and go around Donaldson to fire in. Easington scored a last minute consolation when the ball was played in from the left for Thompson to fire in from close range. A good overall performance and a good result.
