Chester le Street Town Ladies travelled to play Long Eaton in the FAWNL Plate Cup on Sunday and came away with a very creditable 1-0 win.
The game kicked off in torrential weather which continued for most of the game, but the pitch was in very decent condition and held up well. The Cestrians had the majority of chances in the first half, with Elizabeth Clarke-Thompson bringing out a couple of great saves from the Long Eaton keeper but not quite enough to break the deadlock. The Cestrians did have the ball in the net, however was judged to have been off-side by the linesman so it remained 0-0 at HT
The second half continued in the same manner as the first, Chester le Street dominating and creating loads of problems in wide areas, but not quite getting on the end of things to put the tie to bed. A couple of changes mixed things up a bit and gave Long Eaton more to think about, Jess Ellison and Kacie Elson, adding to the attacking threat. Despite all the possession and chances, the Cestrians were unable to see off Long Eaton in 90 mins
The critical goal came on 95 mins when once again Clarke-Thompson got in behind the opposition full back and smashed in a great ball across the goal mouth; Nichole Havery was brave, hurled herself on the end of it at the back post to break the deadlock, injuring herself in the process. Chester le Street Ladies playing out the last 10 mins with 10 players as Kacie Elison was carried off with an injury.
